about palmetto oasis Our Mission Statement........ “To promote the ancient art of bellydance in a way that encourages women’s self-esteem and wellness, inspiring them to bring forth their creativity and passion for life.” The Palmetto Oasis Middle Eastern Dance Troupe (POMEDT), formed in 1993 in Charleston, South Carolina, entertains and mesmerizes audiences with their talent, authentic costumes, and wide variety of dance styles. When you attend one of our performances, you'll have the opportunity to see a variety of dance styles and beautiful costumes—from cabaret (Raks sharki) and the ethnic, to the unique Tribal Style complete with live drummers. We include the use of many props in our dances such as finger cymbals, canes, veils, swords, candles, and tambourines. Our troupe is currently comprised of 20 talented members with a wide range of ages and backgrounds who have proven expertise in the art of middle eastern dance and have auditioned for the performance troupe. We all enjoy the camaraderie of performance and the love of dance, and we’d be delighted to perform for your event. Several of our troupe members also teach classes to the general public in the local area (no experience necessary), To learn more see our "instruction" page. 25% of our proceeds proudly go towards the Susan G. Komen "Lowcountry Race for the Cure."
